March Challenge!

The challenge I chose for March, not drinking from plastic water bottles, combines a few aspects I’ve been wishing to tackle for a while. One is for the greater good and saving the environment by consuming less plastic. The other is more personal which is to get rid of some of my “weird” habits that are not at all practical. I’ve been nicknamed “Whale” by my mother years ago for my water consumption. I drink so much water that we had to buy a new fridge and place it close to my bedroom for water only. The keyword here is “fridge” and not “cooler” because, for an unknown reason, we are a family that never drinks water in glasses. For years and years I never really paid attention to this until I realised the amount of plastic that comes from our house alone. It freaked me out and made me feel like a failure. I’m known as the “environmental conscience” in the office, how could I do that at home? Once I realised that I decided to take an action. I expected this month to be tough. It’s not easy to shake a habit you’ve had almost all your life. Especially when accompanied with hygiene-related issues and phobias. It started off perfectly, 3 days passed by easily and I was so happy with my progress. However, my phobias won on the 4th day since I was in another office and couldn’t bear the idea of drinking in a glass that is used by random people. I expected this incident to shake my confidence and ruin what I planned for the month, but surprisingly it didn’t. Two weeks passed very smoothly until, once again, I had to break this resolution. This time however, I’m proud to say it was due to lack of glasses in that certain place I was at, and not a hygiene issue. Today is the 29th of March and I am very proud to say that I’ve acquired a new habit of drinking in glasses in my office, and filling out a large glass container at home for the rest of the day! After this small challenge, I would advise everyone to try something similar every month. You’d be surprised of your level of commitment and dedication to whatever challenge you choose. You’ll feel more confident and capable, and trust me, it feels sooooo good!
