Does your head go instantly to Lewitt when this subject is brought up? Mine does. I have always had this fear of someone asking me the question that is how do I find inspiration. Or where do I go looking for muse. It is scary because for the longest time, I have thought about it in
my mind would totally fail me and it would feel like the tiny little operator in my head is working its way around going through all of my files of fine art I’ve looked at and papers I have read and lay them all out and get this huge pile of papers and there would be no way to ever comprehend any
of it and then it goes to total shut down mode and you’re stuck with the cliche save yourself answer: It just comes to me! Which is a total and an utter lie. So like, who’s Lewitt? Just some cool pretentious art guy that just simplified everything and wrote a letter to someone telling them to just DO IT. In all caps too so you know it is serious. It is actually pretty serious. The idea of just doing things is really simple and yet a few people seem to be applying it. It is not that easy to do. But boy does it open up your mind and makes you create like you have never created before. So now when someone asks me how do I get inspiration, I just tell them I do not hesitate and I grab my sketchbook and start sketching and writing down even the dumbest things that pop up in my brain. It really gets your head going and the idea of having your hand freely flowing is a liberating thing, all you need is a pen and a paper for creativity. Super easy. Or is it.
